What is Common Novel? Here at Common Novel, we love all things genre fiction. From terrifying horror to mushy romance to
weird-ass sci-fi, we cover everything genre.
Despite dominating the publishing market (and we mean
DOMINATING—romance, mystery, and speculative fiction alone brought in around
2.8 billion dollars in 2012,
compared to about 471 million from classic literary fiction), popular fiction
is often overlooked when it comes to serious reviews, commentary, and analysis.
We thought it deserved more, and that’s why we founded Common Novel. We feature a wide variety of content, ranging from the silly to the semi-academic. That means you may find a list of “The Sexiest Machines in Science Fiction” next to an article talking about sex in romance novels from a feminist perspective. We also provide reviews of the latest titles in romance, young adult, new adult, horror, mystery, science fiction, and fantasy. Why Cover so Many Genres?
There are several reasons we decided to create a space for
all genres to come and mingle, but the most important is that readers (and books) span genres. There are dozens of fantastic blogs focusing
on romance, or science fiction, but we thought there should be a place for the
reader who loves romance novels and science
fiction (maybe both at the same time! with a mystery thrown in! written for
young adults!).
After all, those are the kinds of readers that we are. Who are we?Rachel Lyn Paxton, Co-Founder![]() Rachel fell in love with reading upon discovering Harry Potter in the 6th grade. And, to the dismay of those around her, she never quite grew out of young adult books. She'll read any pop-culture phenomenon at least once (often many times) and is always on the look-out for the next BIG thing. Naturally, she covers the young adult and new adult beats for Common Novel. Everything from romance to horror, as long as it's aimed at a younger audience, she's all over it. She also has the pleasure of reviewing all the great (and not so great) corresponding movies and TV shows.
Rachel is currently working on one of her many novels, a young adult sci-fi story. For more information, visit her website or follow her @rachpax. Diana Christine Biller, Co-Founder![]()
When Diana was supposed to be studying for her law school
classes, what she was actually doing was reading romance novels. In order to justify her “hobby,” she started
spouting a bunch of fancy ideas about them, which she then began—quite
unfortunately—to take seriously. Now she
covers the romance beat for Common Novel, where she makes a lot of penis jokes
and talks a lot about feminism.
Diana is currently finishing her second novel, Trashy Magic. It is, predictably, a romance novel. For more information, follow her @dcbiller. |
