Common Novel is a celebration of genre reading. It’s a celebration of the tattered paperback, of the third-time-through, and of the book that’s currently living in your purse. It’s a celebration of the genres themselves: from romance to mystery to fantasy. Most of all, it’s a celebration of readers.
Why start a blog that includes so many genres? The most important reason is that readers (and books) span genres. There are dozens of fantastic blogs focusing on romance, or science fiction, but we thought there should be a place for the reader who loves romance novels and science fiction (maybe both at the same time! with a mystery thrown in! written for young adults!).
After all, those are the kinds of readers that we are. And who are we? We’re two recovering law students who spent as much time reading novels as we did reading legal textbooks. More importantly, we’re two people who have spent our entire lives reading and loving all kinds of genre fiction (there’s nothing better to read under the covers with a flashlight, after all).
So here’s what you can expect from us. We cover romance, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, horror, young adult, and new adult (some of these more heavily than others). We’ll be inviting guest bloggers to come on and talk about their favorite genres too, and we have some exciting posts lined up from them already. Our content will range from the semi-academic (for example, a series discussing sex in romance novels through a feminist lens) to the useful (what to buy your mystery-loving father for Father’s day) to the silly (who are the most irritating characters you’ve ever read?).
Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be running a series that’s intended to introduce each genre to readers who haven’t read it before—each post written by a reader who loves the genre. We’re also going to be launching our “Date Night” series (running every Thursday afternoon), in which a member of our team will put together a perfect Friday night date—movie, clothes, food, and all.
So stay awhile, and let’s have some fun.
Here’s looking forward to it,
Rachel and Diana
