Rachel: Well, you got your wish. The third episode of Outlander did indeed up the ante on Geillis Duncan's weirdness. What were your general feelings on the episode?
Diana: That bitch is so weird. I adore everything about her. The way she never blinks. The way she somehow always looks up through her eyelashes and to the side. And was that a feathered dress she was wearing? I think it was.

Rachel: Ugh, I'm not sure I can get past her super creepy seduction scene
Diana: Whatever. A girl's got to do what a girl's got to do.
Rachel: and she seemed like she would be a good friend for Claire, but now, it seems like maybe not
Diana: I guess it kind of depends on what you think "being a good friend" constitutes
Rachel: More… she wouldn't call Claire out as being a liar
Diana: Moving to the episode in general, I really liked it! There was a lot of medical stuff, which I was very interested in, and a lot of Geillis, which obviously I enjoyed. Not much Jamie--and I have some thoughts about our Mr. Frasier later--but in general I had a nice time watching it. You?
Rachel: Oh man. I thought the first episode was slow? It had nothing on this one. And, as you point out, very little Jamie. And no shirtless Jamie to speak of. And was he macking on some other girl? I didn't like that.
But I do have to give Claire some props, she knows how to run the show. And wrap all those men around her little fingers.
Diana: The pacing has been all over the place in this show so far. I'm pretty okay with slow simmering television, but Tim agreed with you about the lack of action.
Re: Jamie Frasier, not only was he macking on some sixteen year old, he was really rude to said sixteen year old earlier in the episode
Not cool, man. Teenage girls are fragile as shit.
Rachel: So rude!
Diana: AND why was he talking that much during a concert? Unacceptable.
Rachel: He really had some bad moments this episode
which I think was the show’s way of saying, "hey, Claire has a husband. Remember Frank? Here's a flashback in case you don't."
Diana: Well, good job show, you reminded me. And now I'm really kind of weirded out by the Claire-Jamie romance.
Because seriously how many days has it even been since she left Frank?
Like a couple of weeks maybe?
Rachel: a couple of weeks tops
I know last week I was all Jamie all the time, happy to forget about poor old husband Frank
But Jamie was such a dillweed this episode that I found myself hoping Claire could find better choices all around.
No longer Team Jamie, I am now Team Claire.
Diana: Me too! Team Claire, all the way (Also a little bit Team Geillis. Which is a dangerous team to be on.)
And what did you think about the voiceovers in this episode? Better? Worse?
Rachel: It seemed better, I think. Less noticeable at any rate. I only really got annoyed during a particularly long one at the end.
Diana: Oh man the one at the end was terrible! So melodramatic.
Rachel: Ugh. No kidding. And also, didn't seem to fit the episode.
Like... how did she end up thinking all that?
It just seemed like the scenes did not translate so that it matched her voiceover
Diana: Agree totally.
Okay. Going forward. What are you hoping for?
Rachel: I want to see her fight her new enemy: preacher dude.
Diana: That guy is super terrifying
do not like
I would like to see Jamie be less irritating
Rachel: hahaha
well. Obviously, I'd like that too
and I'd prefer if he would be less irritating without a shirt on
Diana: Obviously
I'd like to see the exciting knitwear trend continue
Really liked that
Also more feather dresses
It's getting a little Hunger Games up in there
Diana: Whatever. A girl's got to do what a girl's got to do.

Rachel: true story. I feel strongly that people on etsy will be making some of the knitwear soon enough.
Diana: Excellent. The world needs more weird knitwear. I feel that strongly.
Any final thoughts?
Rachel: The show needs more action and quickly. It was nice to see some of the societal workings, like the harsh punishments, and the religious fanatics, and what it was like without medicine. But I don't think all of that should have been in the third episode. Because at this point, Claire's done almost nothing except make herself indispensable to the castle. The romance angle is almost unbelievable at this point and the action is almost non-existent.
They really need to turn that around next episode, by either bringing the romance angle back, or having Claire make a run for it.
Diana: While I'm pretty okay with low action levels, I agree that it would be nice to see *something* happen next week. I think the show spent a lot of time doing setup in this episode for action that will happen later in the season. Maybe some of that will happen next week? I guess we'll know soon enough!
Till next week!
